Please enter a detailed account of your progress so far. (i.e.m your current hypothesis, questions, articles found, issues you are dealing with etc.) I expect at least three unique paragraphs from each person (even if you are working with a partner). I will use these as part of our course discussions. Dr. D
Looking around the internet for articles seemed to be really hard for me, because I wasn't finding many articles related to my topic. Once I found the article on tattoos and risky behavior/ age when had sex, I felt as if I was on the right path. I think that with the topic I have I could use a survey like in the article I found and randomly as people around campus when they had lost their virginity, what types of risky behaviors they would like to or have done in the past and lastly I would ask them whether or not they had tattoos or piercings, and compare whether or not tattoos has an effect on the age people have sex. This topic I think is really interesting, and I would really like to in the future do some sort of study comparing culture within it, because in many different cultures people tend to get more tattoos and piercings and they are accepted better in other cultures. I was really struggling with the little information that I had on the topic and how I could incorporate tattoos into the study, but now that I found that article ( the one I passed in on Friday) I felt as if I was in the right direction, and I felt comfortable with what I want to test. I am really interested in figuring out whether or not people that have tattoos do infact have sex sooner, or if they are likely to participate in risky behaviors. I am really looking forward to doing this experiment, however the only concerns that I have with this is that I cant seem to find many articles that are linked to my topic, so I may need to set up a meeting with you so we can figure out how I can find more information and research that correlate with what I am planning on experimenting on.
In the beginning for the most part it was hard to find articles for me. I seem to be having the same issue as a few others in the class. My first time around I was looking into music and music therapy and how it affects ones personality. But after further research I came to a dead end in my research. After a few discussions with my fellow classmates I decided to stick with music but look at a different aspect. This time I will not be comparing music therapy and personality but more so of the difference with extroverts and introverts. The differences with music preference and personality are there any correlation between the two. My control will be white noise vs. non white noise. I can look into people’s iTunes and have them take personality tests. I am more enthused to do this kind of research because it is more exciting to me. This time around I hope to find better articles and more interesting finds. I am ready to get the ball moving and ready to see this project start to come together. My hypothesis is that people’s personalities will match the type of music that they listen too. Only concerns I have at this moment is looking for articles. I do not want to run into the issues that I had before. This is actually something I am really interested in looking more into and I do not want to stop my research because there aren’t enough articles. Also what would be the best personality test to use for this study? Other than that I am really excited to see what the results will start to show and is there actually a correlation?
Originally I was playing with the idea of color preference and perception. I wanted to see if personality, mood or sex has an impact on the color an individual would gravitate toward. The article that I read discussed gender differences in color preference and also perception of colors in relation to mood and feelings. Additionally, I wanted to see if there was a difference in color perception as it is said that many men are color blind or at least see less shades of color than women. As I did more research I came across the idea of incorporating music in the experiment. This shifted my experiment a little. One experiment that I could conduct is a brain game that identifies what colors are associated with each kind of music. It is hypothesized that upbeat songs in a major key will be associated with colors like blue whereas slower minor key songs will be linked to colors like yellow. In addition, a clip of a rock ballad will remind many people of the color red and like colors. A second idea I had was to conduct a Stroop color word test. This is where colors are spelt out and written in a different color than they spell out. For example, the color Green is spelled out but written in the color blue). It is hypothesized that it will take more time to identify the color when it is written in a different color. I thought about having two groups for this experiment. One that completed the experiment in a quiet room and another that did it in a room playing music. I was wondering if the music would have an effect on the concentration of the participants.
So far I am still doing my research topic on meditation. Still not sure if I am going to do meditation and temp with heart rate and blood pressure, or if I want to do it on education. I have found on good article as of right now but I am sure i will find many more really good ones to read that will help me with my research. For right now I can only find articles on meditation and the effects or education and how it improves ones grades or not. I am still searching the temperature topic but there seems to not be really anything on it which is a bummer. I was thinking if I cant find that much on temperature then I would stick to education. I was also thinking about doing both topics with education and temperature and how meditation effects those both. Not sure if thats a good thing to do both of them but thats just what I have been thinking. Once I figure out exactly what I want to do I will have a thesis.
My current hypothesis is still to see if there are similarities in couples what exactly these similarities are yet I am not totally sure. I am still trying to figure out what it is exactly I want to focus on. I was originally having a lot of trouble finding articles that would work for my experiment. So I think that once I figure out exactly what aspects of the similarities in couples I want to look at is when I will really be able to have a definite hypothesis to test. Over the last couple of days I have been having less trouble finding articles that would be helpful to me. I have recently found a couple articles that focus on facial resemblances between different couples and if we chose people who look like our opposite-sex parent when looking for a romantic partner. I have also looked at articles that look at physical attraction and the role it plays in mate-selection. So far I am still not totally sure how I am going to execute the experiment as far as whether I will use a survey of real/mixed couples and ask people to rate the pictures for similarities or if I will do something different. I think that as I become more in-depth with the experiment and begin to narrow in on what the focus of it will be, will be when I get a better idea of what would be a good way of testing the theory.
I am still not sure if I am going to look at personality and sport performance or personality and leadership in sport. The article I found was on leadership and how many formal and informal leaders there are on a sports team. I found this article very interesting. I have found a few articles on both the subjects and I think it comes down to now is me making a decision on which one I am going to choose. If I do choose the leadership component I would like to look at different sport teams and how and why leaders are chosen. I liked the article I found that was about formal and informal leadership was very interesting and is something I think many teams should take into account. I think with this type of information and experiment the best way to get information from athletes and coaches would probably be by survey. Using surveys makes me nervous because the tendency people have to lie when filling out a survey.
I am struggling to find articles that I can use. I keep getting articles that focus on one certain race or ethnicity, or ones that aren't even related to my thesis at all. I even got one in Spanish. I talked to McCoy and he gave me an article to look at the references for, but all the articles I found this way aren't available. I think I want to explore romantic relationships in college students and see if distance plays a factor in their attachment. I mean, if you're at the same school together are people happier, or do they feel they need space? If it's a long distance relationship does the relationship become weaker? I want to explore if distance makes the heart grow fonder, or if it's more along the lines of out of sight out of mind. I currently have about four articles, I just need to go to the library to see if the people working there can get these articles for me. I have only found one so far that has potential to be useful for me.
I have found two articles so far that relate to my hypothesis and one manuscript. Effectsof acute bouts of exercise on cognition, Tomporowski; Be smart...Exercise effects on brain and cognition, Hillman, erickson and Kramer; and the manuscript Exercise and children's intelligence, Cognition and Academic Achievement, Tomporowski, Davis, Miller and Naglieri. To find these, I have definately been using the sources listed on the back of the articles of the authors listed. I found that Tomporowski has done alot of research on cognition and the effects of exercise. I still plan on using the same hypothesis; How physical exercise effects cognition on written test. It is measurable. I have set dependent and independent variables. The exercise vs. quiet meditation are my independent variables and the written test scores will be my dependent variable. I plan on setting up some time with Dr. Kolek to discuss ideas with him regarding my experiment setup. His input will certainly be very valuable to my processes. My only issues have been using the InfoTrac as we discussed in class to find my articles. I think that now that I have some authors that have studied what I am looking for that maybe if I look them up, I may have some better luck. I think that googling the topics first, finding some valid information and then using the InfoTrac, may just be the way to go.
